Description

Mechanical Seals are used on most pumps, mixers and agitators. Mechanical seals are usually made up of two parts, where two virtually flat (lapped) faces run against each other, creating a seal. The one face is part of the rotating unit that usually turns with the shaft (seal face). The other face is usually stationary (seat face).

Features of Mechanical seals:

  • Invisible leakage
  • Less friction therefore less power loss
  • Very little wear on sleeves and shafts
  • Flexibility
  • Long life

Performance:

  • Standard mechanical seals can withstand temperatures of up to 260 ’c
  • Standard mechanical seals can handle shaft speeds of up to 3600 RPM through the choice of secondary seals and the right combination of seal & seat faces.
  • Mechanical seals can be ordered with different configurations to seal pressures above 200 psi.

Types of mechanical seals:

  • In-line mechanical seals
    – Single spring seals
    – Tapered spring seals
    – Multiple spring seals
    – Metal bellow seals
    – PTFE bellow seals
    – Wave spring seals
  • Outboard seals
  • Cartridge seals
  • Tandem seals
  • Mixer seals
  • Agitator seals

Mechanical Seal Materials:

  • Carbon Graphite
  • Ceramic
  • Silicone carbide
  • Tungsten carbide
  • Stainless steel
  • GFPTFE (glass filled PTFE)(Teflon®)
  • Elastomers – Nitrile – Viton – EPDM – Silicone – Kalrez
